Dental Emergency In My Child

Be Prepared For A Dental Emergency.

Dental emergencies are bound to come up when you have young children. Dr. Harbin and our team at Hendersonville Family Dentistry want you to be prepared in case you run into a difficult situation. Problems may vary, from minor gum irritation to knock-out-teeth. Take a  look at the different possibilites and how you can handle them.

Dental Emergency Vs. Not Dental Emergency.

Teething pain is as normal as your child’s first set of teeth falling out. On the other hand, if a baby tooth is knocked out in a forceful accident, make sure you bring him or her into Hendersonville Family Dentistry to check that other damage hasn’t occurred in the mouth. On occasion, permanent teeth may grow in before baby teeth have fallen out. This may not cause any discomfort, but Dr. Harbin and Dr. Jones should make sure the teeth are growing in properly. Catching teeth that are coming in incorrectly can prevent issues from arising into adult hood.

If your child is suffering from bleeding gums, rinse your child’s mouth with warm salt water and apply light pressure to the area. If you become concerned about the amount of blood, contact our office and we will schedule an appointment for your little one as soon as possible.

Don’t forget as a parent you provide the best education to your children on the importance of proper oral hygiene by setting a good example.

Endurance Athletes May be More Prone to Tooth Erosion & Cavities

Effect of Endurance Training on Dental Erosion

A recent study evaluated 35 triathletes who trained at least five hours per week and 35 non-exercising individuals. The participants completed a questionnaire, providing their age, gender, height, body weight, oral hygiene practices and weekly training schedules. They also provided information on beverages they drank and sports nutrition products used during training. All participants had clinical oral exams and had saliva output and pH testing during inactivity. Fifteen athletes also had saliva assessments during exercise. The pH of swimming pools used for triathletes training was also factored into the data.

The Effects of Physical Training & Use of Sports Drinks

The use of sports drinks and nutrition lower the pH of athletes saliva to levels where dental erosion can occur. Longer training time is consistent with a higher intake of carbohydrate sports bar, gels and drinks and this might cause higher risk for caries.  Athletes breath through their mouth during hard exercise and their mouth gets dry. If they consume sports nutrition/drinks at this moment saliva protection might be diminished. Athletes need special oral health regimen and use of fluoride containing toothpaste is important. The fluoride in the toothpaste increases the resistance of tooth hard tissue against carries and erosive challenges.

Why Do I Have To Get X-rays Of My Teeth At My Dental Appointments?

Dentist Discusses The Importance Of X-rays.

Dental x-rays are pictures of the teeth, bones, and soft tissues around them to help find problems with teeth, mouth & jaw. X-ray pictures can show cavities beneath the dental structures, and even bone loss that can not be seen during visual examination. Dental x-rays may also be taken for follow up after dental treatments. There are different types of x-rays that can be taken at your dental visit, upon visiting Hendersonville Family Dentistry.

Hendersonville Dental ProviderDiscusses The Different X-rays That Are Taken In Office

Bitewing X-rays show the upper and lower back teeth and how the teeth touch each other in a single view. These X-rays can show decay between the teeth, and also shows how well the upper and lower teeth line up. They can also show bone loss & severe gum disease.

Occlusal X-rays show the roof or floor of your mouth, and can be used to find extra teeth. For example teeth that haven’t broken through the gums, jaw fractures, cysts, abscesses or growths.

Panoramic X-rays shows a broad view of the jaws, teeth, and sinuses. This X-ray doesn’t find cavities, but they can show problems such as impacted teeth, bone abnormalities, cysts, solid growths(tumors), infections & even fractures.

The great thing about digital x-rays is that they can be sent to a computer where they are recorded and saved. Here at Hendersonville Family Dentistry all of our X-rays are digital, and low radiation.

  • Is your jewelry beginning to not sparkle anymore. Grab an old toothbrush and apply toothpaste to the jewelry and scrub clean. It will be back to sparkling in no time.
  • Got a motorcycle and you want that chrome to be clean? Some chrome cleaners can be so expensive. Apply toothpaste and scrub with a light cloth and it will begin to sparkle & gleam like you never imagined.
  • Have an odor on your hands that when washing your hands it still doesn’t seem to go away. Scrub with some toothpaste and your hands will smell minty fresh!

Don’t believe toothpaste can do all of these things, try it for yourself and see. I am sure you will be excited to know that these home remedies are inexpensive and work as good if not better then some of the most expensive cleaner’s.
