Idea’s To Celebrate Valentines Day This Year
- Enjoy a tasty treat. There are plenty of options when it comes to cooking and/or baking on Valentine’s Day. Make your significant other his or her favorite meal or sweet treat, or make your own favorite dish to enjoy on this day. Oh, and be sure to make enough for leftovers!
- Make a personalized card. Instead of buying a card from the grocery store, take the time to make your own for a loved one. People love handwritten notes, especially when it’s from someone special. If you’re single this Valentine’s Day, make a card for fellow single friend to brighten the day and remind the person that he or she is also loved.
- Watch a movie. We all know there are plenty of romance movies out there. Put on your favorite romantic comedy, or pick up your significant other’s favorite movie to watch together. Even better, if you’re single, pick up your own favorite movies to watch to pass the time this Valentine’s Day.
- Do nothing! We all know Valentine’s Day can sometimes get a lot of hype. If you’re worried about not making a reservation in time, don’t feel like planning an extravagant night out, or simply not in the holiday mood this year, spend your day sitting back and relaxing.

Tooth Decay Is Preventable.
Good news! Yes, in fact, tooth decay is preventable. Decay, which is caused by sugars left in your child’s mouth, can turn into an acid which in turn can break down his or her teeth. Children are at high risk for tooth decay for a simple reason: many children and adolescents tend to be lax in their oral hygiene habits.
How To Prevent Tooth Decay.
- Start early: After the age of two, brush your child’s teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day. And, if possible, clean between the teeth with dental floss at least once a day, preferably before they go to bed.
- Don’t allow your little ones to eat after cleaning teeth at bedtime, as salivary flow decreases while they sleep and their teeth become vulnerable to cavities.
- Do not allow your little ones to nibble food or sip drinks continuously, and keep in mind that a low sugar diet also helps keep tooth decay at bay. Allow time between meals for saliva to neutralize acids and repair teeth.
- Drinking water frequently throughout the day can also reduce the possibility of new cavities forming.
- Dental Sealants can also protect your child’s teeth from cavities. Sealants, which are applied to chewing surfaces of molars, act as a shield between the tooth and harmful bacteria.
Finally make sure your child visits Hendersonville Family Dentistry approximately every six months for checkup and routine cleaning.
What Is The Best Age For Braces?
One question that many people, especially parents face is; what is the best age for braces? Get them too early and further treatment might be required later on in life; get them too late and they may need to be worn longer period of time or cause additional problems for the already angst-ridden teenage years.
There’s no universal right answer to this question, but we can draw from our years of experience to provide some advice on factors to consider when deciding the best age for braces.
Hendersonville Dentist Recommends:
We recommend having a child evaluated for braces as early as seven. This does not mean that braces will be applied that early, but it can give you a road map of what future treatment might look like. By age seven, most baby teeth have started to come out and an orthodontist can get a good sense of what the alignment of permanent teeth will look like. In some cases, braces or partial teeth aligners may be applied at this stage if a child is having difficulty talking or eating due to poor teeth alignment.
If your child needs braces at an early age, be prepared to help him or her take care of them. Wearing braces can provide a valuable lesson in self-care, but may require additional intervention until good habits are formed.
What Is TMD?
That ache in your head may stem from your jaw. If your jaw falls out of alignment, you could have temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD.
It’s not clear what causes TMD. Obesity may factor in. Stress and pressure on the jaw may also contribute. A misaligned bite ( where your upper and lower teeth don’t fit together when you close your mouth) may cause TMD symptoms, too.
TMD can affect your life and health by making it painful to eat and hard to sleep. Some people find the nagging pain difficult to bear.
Symptoms of TMD May Include:
- Recurring headaches with no other cause
- Pain along and behind the ears
- Pain in your cheeks or lower face
- Clicking noises when you talk or chew
- Tired or sore jaw muscles after eating
- Limited jaw movement

Memorial Holiday In Hendersonville TN
Whew! I can’t believe that May is already on the tail end of being over. Did it fly by for anyone else, or was it just me? Kids will be out of school by this week, parents are you ready for that? That could only mean one thing, that SUMMER is officially here! With the Memorial Holiday soon arriving we wanted to inform our patients of our upcoming holiday hours. I know for most of you, you know our office is usually open each Saturday. Unfortunately, we will be closed this Saturday-May 27th and Monday Monday 29th in honor of the Memorial Day Holiday. We will reopen on Tuesday-May 30th and resume normal hours beginning at 8:00 am.
Summer Has Arrived!
This Memorial Day we want you to enjoy your weekend with your friends, family and neighbors but please remember what this holiday is all about. Remember those who have passed and who made the ultimate sacrifice for you and I. Make sure you tell one of your local veterans thank you for their service.
Many patients are under the impression that the harder brushing leads to cleaner teeth, but that’s not true. Gentle brushing is just as effective, and less likely to cause damage. Other good brushing habits include brushing your teeth at least twice a day, replacing your toothbrush after a few months, and brushing for at least two minutes each time. It can be tough to keep track of the time when you are aiming for two minutes but these tips can help.
Two Minutes Twice A Day
- Set a timer: Setting a timer is a sure-fire way to hit your two-minute goal on the dot. Leave a kitchen timer in your bathroom so that it is easy to set each time you start brushing your teeth. Hit each surface of all of your top and bottom teeth, and keep brushing until the timer rings. Many electric toothbrushes have a built in timer that you can use instead of a kitchen timer.
- Entertaining Yourself for Two Minutes: Time flies when you are having fun, and you can stay entertained as you brush your teeth for two minutes here are some idea’s.
Time your favorite song and sing it in your head as you brush your teeth.
Find a two minute video on the internet that you want to watch, and start it when you begin to brush your teeth.
Do squats in the bathroom as you brush. By the time you get to 20 squats, your two minutes should be over IF you do them slowly.
- Allow Children to use technology: Toothsavors is an app designed to inspire children to brush. A game to fight an evil sorceress who causes cavities. A real life reminder to brush two a day. A built in timer that helps kids brush for two minutes.
New Year’s Resolution
Happy New Year ladies & gentlemen! We hope that you are enjoying the beginning of 2017, if you didn’t like 2016 this is your chance to make a fresh start! If you are looking for a New Year’s Resolution we have the perfect one for you!
Taking your oral health to a whole new level! Do you brush twice a day? Are you flossing once a day? Are you seeing a dentist AT LEAST twice a year? If you answered no to any of these questions this is the perfect new year’s resolution for you!
Oral Health Is The New Year Resolution
We know most people hate visiting the dentist, but it’s better to visit us twice a year and maintain your oral health than it is only come into our office when you have a problem area. Most of the time we see patients who only come in when there is a problem, but that’s more expensive than if you just saw us regularly for your dental checkups. Filling’s are inexpensive compared to a root canal or extraction.
We know you think getting your teeth is a pain, but really it isn’t. It takes 45 minutes if that, and some x-rays to ensure you are taking care of your mouth. Did you know our hygienist’s and dentist’s can catch oral cancer or other problem area’s before they get worse. So why not come in twice a year at a minimum?
Make sure you are flossing once a day at least. Do you sit in a lot of traffic each day? Throw some floss in your car this way when you are sitting in traffic bored you can maintain your smile.
Also, but most importantly brush at least twice a day! This takes three minutes in the morning and three minutes in the evening! Maintaining your oral health isn’t painful neglecting your oral health is!
Water Picks Are They For Me?
Water picks, sometimes called “oral irrigators”, make an excellent addition to your regular home care regimen of brushing and flossing. Especially helpful to those who suffer from periodontal disease and those patients of ours undergoing orthodontic treatment with full-bracketed braces, water picks use powerful tiny bursts of water to dislodge food scraps, bacteria, and other debris nestled in the crevices of your mouth. Children undergoing orthodontic treatment may find using a water pick is beneficial if their toothbrush bristles tend to get caught on their wire brackets.
What Does A Water Pick Do?
When using a water pick, you’re not only dislodging any particles or debris and bacteria you might have missed when brushing, you are also gently massaging the gums, which helps promote blood flow in the gums and keeps them healthy. While water picks are an excellent addition to your daily fight against gingivitis and other periodontal diseases, they are incapable of fully removing plaque, which is why Dr. Harbin and Dr. Jones and our team at Hendersonville Family Dentistry want to remind you to keep brushing and flossing.

Does Eating Affect My Gums?
Gums are the hero of the mouth, they keep your teeth secure, protect your oral bones, and battle against bacteria on a daily basis. While we take care to make sure that our teeth are properly cleaned daily, we can often forget to take care of our gums. An easy way to make sure your gums are getting the healthy support they need is through your diet.
Gum-Loving Foods to Incorporate into your diet.
- Onions can neutralize oral bacteria, they have microbial properties that target the most common types of bacteria that can cause gum disease and cavities.
- Leafy greens, such as kale & spinach are filled to the brim with mouth-healthy vitamins and minerals. They hold vitamin C, which boosts the production of red blood cells and reduces inflammation.
- Green Tea can stave off inflammation of the body. Try drinking green tea daily to give your gums a healthy boost.
- Celery, carrots and apples these foods are very crunchy and they are excellent at scraping away stuck on food and plaque. Crunchy fruits and vegetables also happen to be high in fiber, which, again, means they take longer to chew and generate more saliva. Saliva is great for flushing the mouth of bacteria near the gum line.
- Milk, yogurt and cheese dairy products are great for teeth because they are high in calcium, a mineral that helps to strengthen bone, but they also are great for your gums. Include a healthy amount of dairy in your diet by drinking a cup of milk daily or by eating snacks that include dairy such as cheese or yogurt.
