Martin Luther King Jr Day (officially birthday of Martin Luther King Jr.) is an American federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around King’s birthday, January 15. The holiday is similar to holidays set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.
King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for federal holiday in King’s honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.

When most patient ask Dr. Harbin and Dr. Jones this question, they’re thinking strictly about sugar content-cut out the bacteria-feeding sugar that present in regular soda by opting for a diet soda and it will be better for your teeth. That seems logical right? Well, there’s a bit more to it than that. Let’s take a closer look at how any kind of soda can affect your dental health.
Diet Soda & Regular Soda
The main culprit in these diet drinks that leads to decay is the acid content. Diet sodas and other sugar-free drinks are usually highly acidic, which weakens the enamel on your teeth and makes them more susceptible to cavities and dental erosion. The level of phosphoric acid, citric acid, and or tartaric acid is usually high in sugar free drinks so it’s best to avoid them.
So now that we know the acidity of diet sodas and sugar-free-drinks contributes to tooth decay, so what about regular soda? Like we alluded to earlier, regular soda is high in sugar-a 12 ounce can contains roughly ten teaspoons of sugar- and sugar feeds the decay-causing bacteria in the mouth.
The problem caused by both diet and regular soda is exacerbated when you sip on them throughout the day. If you drink it all in one sitting, you won’t be washing sugar and or acids over your teeth all day long and your saliva will have a chance to neutralize the pH in your mouth.

Holiday Hours- When We Will Be Closing & Opening.
Since this week and next week with the anticipation of Christmas we have days we will be closed. We will be closed on Friday-December 23 & Saturday-December 24. We will be OPEN the day after Christmas December 26th. We know most people have the day off after Christmas, so we are giving you the opportunity to take your day off and get into our office to use those unused dental benefits. Remember when the clock strikes midnight on December 31st they will be gone and the new year starts over again.
Nobody likes bad breath, and although it can sometimes be difficult to tell if you have it, it is always better to practice good oral health than risk having a smelly mouth. There are many ways to reduce or eliminate bad breath, some are definitely more effective and longer lasting than others.
Ways to Reduce Bad Breath
Floss regularly- As difficult as it can be to remember to floss regularly, when it comes to bad breath, flossing is one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to freshen your mouth. By flossing you are reducing the plaque and bacteria found in areas of your mouth that a toothbrush simply can’t reach, and in return it rids your mouth of the smell associated with that bacteria.
Use Mouthwash- Using some sort of mouthwash can really freshen up your breath, especially if you find it still smells after brushing and flossing.
Always Brush After You Sleep- Whether after taking a nap, or having a full nights sleep, you will want to brush your teeth in order to reduce bad breath. The truth is, bacteria accumulates in your mouth while you are sleeping ( even during a short nap) and that is ultimately the source of bad breath.
There are many ways to freshen your breath beyond just using gum or mints, the above mentioned are just a few for you to try. Test them out and you will likely find your bad breath problem is solved, or at least considerably reduce.
Every October, stores fill their aisles with endless varieties of candy, and kids across the country get ready for some sweet, sticky, chewy treats. For those of us concerned about dental health, this can be a scary thought.
Fortunately, there are some delicious treats that are safer than others. While we love Halloween, this October we are also celebrating National Orthodontic Health Month. In honor of protecting all those beautiful smiles, we’ve put together four easy tips to keep in mind this October.
Keeping Your Smile Healthy this October.
Avoid sticky, chewy, or hard candies that can easily damage orthodontic work. Some of the worst offenders are taffy, caramels, bubblegum and jellybeans.
Ahhh! There are some candies that are no off-limits! Any soft, melt-in-your-mouth candies like chocolates and peanut butter cups are great alternatives.
Beware! All candy is still full of sugar and thus cavity monsters. Be sure to brush and floss after each time consuming candy.
Halloween and National Orthodontic Health Month are only recognized once a year, but why not practice these tips every month. By staying vigilant, you can keep those monsters hidden all year long.
Has your dentist ever said that bonding could fix a certain issue? Have you ever even heard of bonding?
Bonding is a conservative way to repair slightly chipped, discolored, or crooked teeth. During dental bonding, a white filling is placed onto your tooth to improve its appearance. The filling “bonds” with your tooth ,and because it comes in a variety of tooth-colored shades, it closely matches the appearance of your natural teeth.

Tooth bonding can also be used for tooth fillings instead of silver amalgam. Many patients prefer bonded fillings because the white color is much less noticeable than silver. Bonding fillings can be used on front or back teeth, depending on the location and extent of tooth decay.
Bonding is less expensive than other cosmetic treatments and can usually be completed in one visit to our office. However, bonding can stain and is easier to break than other cosmetic treatments, such as porcelain veneers. If it does break or chip, tell Dr. Harbin or Dr. Jones. The bonding can generally be easily patched or repair in one visit.
