Dental Emergency In My Child

Be Prepared For A Dental Emergency.

Dental emergencies are bound to come up when you have young children. Dr. Harbin and our team at Hendersonville Family Dentistry want you to be prepared in case you run into a difficult situation. Problems may vary, from minor gum irritation to knock-out-teeth. Take a  look at the different possibilites and how you can handle them.

Dental Emergency Vs. Not Dental Emergency.

Teething pain is as normal as your child’s first set of teeth falling out. On the other hand, if a baby tooth is knocked out in a forceful accident, make sure you bring him or her into Hendersonville Family Dentistry to check that other damage hasn’t occurred in the mouth. On occasion, permanent teeth may grow in before baby teeth have fallen out. This may not cause any discomfort, but Dr. Harbin and Dr. Jones should make sure the teeth are growing in properly. Catching teeth that are coming in incorrectly can prevent issues from arising into adult hood.

If your child is suffering from bleeding gums, rinse your child’s mouth with warm salt water and apply light pressure to the area. If you become concerned about the amount of blood, contact our office and we will schedule an appointment for your little one as soon as possible.

Don’t forget as a parent you provide the best education to your children on the importance of proper oral hygiene by setting a good example.

It’s Snowing In Hendersonville, TN

Hendersonville Dentist Talks Snow

It’s January 16, 2018 and we are getting pounded with another round of snow. Last Friday we had to close the practice due to icy and snow conditions. Today we are getting another round of just snow thankfully. Most of our patients yesterday called to cancel or reschedule their appointments due to the threat of the weather.

When it snows do you brave it and get out in the weather or do you stay inside where it’s warm. I know most of my staff is from other parts other than Hendersonville, so we all like to see who has the most snow in their area. Those that live in the Cottontown or Portland area usually always beat everyone else.

Our Office Is Open

Our office will be open today, so if you do have a dental appointment with us as of right now we are going to be open. Please call before you brave the weather to ensure that we are still open. Please keep an eye on our Facebook or Instagram to make sure we aren’t closing early or any other issues that may arise.

Enjoy your snow day if you are staying in, and be safe if you are driving into work today.

Broken Tooth An Emergency

Chipped Your Tooth?

When you chip a tooth badly, it can be a very nerve-wracking situation. Dr. Jones and our team want to provide you with some information that can help if you ever supper a chipped or broken tooth. The most common ways people break their teeth are by biting down on something hard, getting hit in the mouth, falling down, or developing cavities that weaken the tooth and allow it to be broken easily. There are a few things that you can do if you find yourself in this situation.

Investigate The Tooth

We recommend that you investigate whether the tooth is partially chipped or completely broken.  Unless you are experiencing a lot of pain or bleeding, this should not be treated as an emergency.

If your teeth show severe damage such as a serious break, split tooth, split root or decay-induced break, Dr. Harbin & Dr. Jones may need to take more time to fix the problem. If you need emergency dental care because a tooth has fallen out, call our practice immediately to schedule an appointment for that day. If you are waiting for an emergency appointment, you can rinse your mouth with warm salt water and apply slight pressure to the area to stop the bleeding. We recommend using an ice pack to reduce the swelling, but don’t take any aspirin because that may increase the bleeding.

If your tooth has completely fallen out of the socket, hold it by the crown and rinse it under running water. Don’t let the tooth become dry, instead place it in salt water or milk until you get to our office. We will then determine if the tooth can be salvaged or will need to be completely replaced.

When dealing with emergencies be sure to schedule an appointment at Hendersonville Family Dentistry as soon as an emergency situation occurs.

Are You Thinking of Getting Braces?

What Is The Best Age For Braces?

One question that many people, especially parents face is; what is the best age for braces? Get them too early and further treatment might be required later on in life; get them too late and they may need to be worn longer period of time or cause additional problems for the already angst-ridden teenage years.

There’s no universal right answer to this question, but we can draw from our years of experience to provide some advice on factors to consider when deciding the best age for braces.

Hendersonville Dentist Recommends:

We recommend having a child evaluated for braces as early as seven. This does not mean that braces will be applied that early, but it can give you a road map of what future treatment might look like. By age seven, most baby teeth have started to come out and an orthodontist can get a good sense of what the alignment of permanent teeth will look like. In some cases, braces or partial teeth aligners may be applied at this stage if a child is having difficulty talking or eating due to poor teeth alignment.

If your child needs braces at an early age, be prepared to help him or her take care of them. Wearing braces can provide a valuable lesson in self-care, but may require additional intervention until good habits are formed.

Were you at work with your co-workers, at home with your family, with friends, or did you simply just watch it on TV to play it safe? We were excited to experience this once in a lifetime sighting and we hope you were too. Let us know below what you thought of the Solar Eclipse.
