So Your Dentist Tells You That You Have Cavities, But Your Teeth Aren’t Giving You Any Problems?
This is a question we have to answer a lot in my office, So I thought it would be good for me to write a post about it for our hendersonville dentist office. And here is the simple answer. Teeth usually do not hurt badly until they almost need a rootcanal. Cavities can be present for years before they ever cause the first bit of pain.
The Problem is Most people, especially Males, Dont Go to the Dentist or Any Doctor for that Matter Unless Something Is Hurting.
We guys assume if it’s not causing us pain it must be fine. Well we couldn’t be more wrong. This is really about the only topic I will preach about to my patients. I tell them their is usually less pain, less time in the dental chair, and a lot less money spent, If patients fix their dental problems before they start hurting.
The Way It Works is Like This.
A small cavity starts to invade the hard shell of your tooth called the enamel. The enamel is pretty thick. Under the enamel is a thicker softer layer called the Dentin. Once the bacteria eats through these two layers into the nerve, a root canal is all that can be done. Once the bacteria have invaded the nerve, the nerve is usually going to die. That is why it is so very important to remove the bacteria before they enter your nerve.
Another reason it is important to remove the cavity is cost. The average cost of a filling in hendersonville tn is probably one to two hundred dollars, but a rootcanal, build up, and crown could cost from 1500 to 2500 dollars. So financially it is a no brainer to get them when they are small.
So here is an action plan to eliminate almost any possibility of this happening to you
1 Go to the dentist every 6 months and have a routine exam and diagnostic x-rays, ( usually free if you have dental insurance)
2 If the dentist finds cavities have them filled
3 Make sure your dentist uses a laser cavity finder called the diagnodent!
4 Make sure your dentist uses a very sharp explorer ( the hook they check your teeth with)
5 Brush and floss daily, you should only floss the teeth you want to keep.
As with most things prevention is key. I don’t care if you come see me or someone else, but please make sure you are going to the dentist twice a year for checkups.
